In a specified street-facing area, a solid fence up to four feet requires tree and shrub landscaping on the street side to screen at least 50% of the fence's linear frontage.
- Corner lots: Sight-triangle restrictions apply near street intersections. The exact location of a proposed fence can affect what is permitted.
- Finished side outward: The finished face must face the neighboring property or street, and the fence must remain within the property boundaries.
- Swimming pools: Pool barriers must meet the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code and applicable Madison pool regulations. Panel height alone does not determine compliance; gate hardware, spacing and the completed layout matter.
Because the rules depend on the fence's position, a six-foot privacy fence that works behind the home may not be allowed along the street-facing portion of the same lot. We recommend checking the property survey and proposed fence line with Madison's Zoning Office before installation.
