Kip's Castle Park

Kip's Castle Park, nestled atop First Mountain on the border of Montclair and Verona, New Jersey, offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty. This 11-acre estate is home to a 9,000-square-foot mansion designed to replicate a medieval Norman castle, complete with thirty rooms, vaulted ceilings, and six ornate fireplaces. Built between 1902 and 1905 by textile magnate Frederic Ellsworth Kip and his wife Charlotte, the castle—originally named "Kypsburg"—was constructed using local trap rock and sandstone, reflecting the couple's appreciation for European architecture. 

Charlotte Kip, credited with designing both the castle and its grounds, cultivated an octagonal rose garden that added to the estate's charm. After her passing in 1926, the property changed hands several times, including a period in the 1980s when it served as a monastery for followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. The estate fell into disrepair until 1985, when it was purchased by the law firm Schwartz, Tobia & Stanziale, who undertook significant restoration efforts. In 2007, Essex County acquired the property, integrating it into the county park system and preserving it as a cultural and historical landmark. 

Today, Kip's Castle Park is open to the public from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, with free admission. Visitors can explore the expansive grounds, which offer panoramic views of New York City, making it a popular spot for photography, picnics, and leisurely walks. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts, providing a serene environment amidst the bustling surroundings. 

While the castle's upper floors house county offices, the first floor is accessible to the public during specific times of the year. In December, the castle participates in the Essex County Historic Holiday House Tour, where visitors can enjoy self-guided tours of the festively decorated interiors, reminiscent of the 1920s holiday season. These events often feature refreshments and provide a glimpse into the estate's rich history. (

Kip's Castle Park serves not only as a historical site but also as a community resource. The county envisions the castle evolving into a premier cultural center, supporting arts and culture throughout the region. Plans include developing museum spaces to showcase the history of the Essex County Park System and offering meeting spaces for community groups and non-profit organizations.
