Fence Installation in Verona, NJ
Verona is built into the slope of the First Watchung Mountain. Streets climb from Bloomfield Avenue up toward the Hilltop, lots step and terrace, and a fence line here rarely runs across flat ground. That terrain — plus one of the more detailed fence codes in Essex County — is where a Verona fence project has to start.
Solanos Fence installs vinyl, aluminum, WPC composite, wood, post-and-rail and chain link fencing in Verona, NJ, for homes near Verona Park, along the Bloomfield Avenue corridor and up through the Hilltop neighborhoods. We also sell fence materials for pickup at our Fairfield location. Verona is part of our Essex County service area.
Verona's Fence Rules: §150-7.3
Verona regulates fences in §150-7.3 of its zoning code, and a zoning permit is required before a fence is installed — the township's application asks for a property survey (for fences, a to-scale photocopy of a current survey is acceptable). The main residential rules:
- Six-foot maximum height: No fence may exceed six feet at any point, measured from existing ground levels.
- Forward of the house, three feet: Fencing in front of the home's front façade is limited to three feet high, and no fencing may be installed within 10 feet of the front lot line. A six-foot privacy fence belongs behind the front line of the house.
- Corner lots: Within 25 feet of a street corner, a fence may be no more than 30 inches high — low enough to preserve sight lines at intersections.
- Six inches off the property line: No fence may be installed within six inches of the property line, and the finished side — including the posts — must face outward toward the neighbor or street.
- Following the ground: Fences must be erected as close to the ground as possible. Where the ground itself rises, total height may exceed six feet to conform to existing ground heights, provided 80% of the fence stays at or under six feet. Decorative posts may extend no more than six inches above the fence.
- Drainage must keep flowing: A fence must be built so natural drainage still passes — it cannot dam surface water and create ponding on your lot or a neighbor's.
- Prohibited materials: Verona bans barbed wire, chicken wire, poultry netting, canvas, cloth, fiberglass and electrically charged fences, among others.
- Pools: Verona requires swimming pools to be suitably fenced under township requirements, and pool barriers must also meet the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code — the complete enclosure, gates and hardware, not just panel height.
Township reference: Verona Township Code §150-7.3 — Fences.
Fencing Verona's Hillside Lots
The ground is the second design problem on most Verona jobs. A yard that drops toward the street or steps down behind the house changes how panels are set: runs may need to be stepped(level panels in stair-step sections) or racked(panels angled to follow the slope), and post depths and gate swings have to account for grade changes so a gate doesn't drag or gap at the bottom.
Verona's code is written with this terrain in mind — height is measured from existing ground levels, the fence must sit close to the ground, and the drainage rule means a fence line can't be allowed to block the way water already moves across a sloped lot. During a free estimate we walk the grade with you and plan the layout around it, instead of measuring your yard as if it were flat.
We recently prepared an estimate for a Verona property of about 206 feet of fencing with three gates — a good example of how a sloped, multi-run layout gets planned section by section, with gates placed where the ground is workable.
Fence Styles for Verona Homes
Black Aluminum Fencing
Black aluminum fencing suits Verona's front yards and slopes: an open picket style can meet the three-foot limit forward of the front façade(set back at least 10 feet from the front lot line), and aluminum panels rack well to follow rising ground. For pools, our 54-inch black aluminum pool-barrier style is installed where that height is permitted — it is a pool and backyard option, not a front-yard fence.
White Vinyl Privacy Fencing
Behind the front line of the house, where Verona allows up to six feet, white vinyl privacy fencing is the low-maintenance way to close in a backyard. Our standard panels are six feet high by eight feet wide with 2-inch by 7-inch rails. On sloped runs we step the panels so each section stays within the height rules measured from the ground below it.
WPC Composite, Wood, Post-and-Rail and Chain Link
WPC composite fencing gives a modern privacy look and works well on terraced yards; wood and post-and-rail fit the wooded, larger lots toward the Hilltop; and chain link remains a practical option for side and rear boundaries. We price these styles after reviewing your footage, gates and terrain.
Fence Installation Prices in Verona
Current installation specials start at $23 per linear foot for six-foot white vinyl privacy fencing and $28 per linear foot for 54-inch black aluminum pool-barrier fencing. Both offers require a 150-linear-foot minimum project and are subject to service-area restrictions. Gates and removal of existing fencing are priced separately. Three-foot front-yard aluminum, specialty styles and sloped or stepped layouts are priced by individual estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fences in Verona
How tall can a fence be in front of my house in Verona?
Three feet. Under §150-7.3, fencing forward of your home's front façade is limited to three feet high, it must stop at least 10 feet from the front lot line, and on a corner lot it drops to 30 inches within 25 feet of the intersection. Six-foot fencing is for the side and rear of the property, behind the front line of the house.
My yard slopes. How is fence height measured?
From the existing ground. Verona measures the six-foot maximum from existing ground levels, requires fences to sit as close to the ground as possible, and allows the total height to follow rising ground as long as 80% of the fence stays at or under six feet. That's why stepped or racked layouts matter on Verona's hillside lots — and why the fence also has to let natural drainage keep flowing.
Do I need a permit, and how close to the property line can the fence go?
Yes — Verona requires a zoning permit before a fence is installed, and the application calls for a property survey. The fence itself must sit at least six inches inside the property line, with the finished side, posts included, facing out toward your neighbor or the street.
