Fence Installation in Union, NJ
In Union, the fence conversation starts in the backyard — because the Township of Union does not allow fences in front yards at all. From Five Points and Connecticut Farms to Vauxhall and Battle Hill, nearly every residential fence project here is about enclosing the side and rear yards correctly: the right height, the right distance from the property line, and the finished side facing your neighbor.
Solanos Fence provides residential and commercial fence installation in Union, NJ, in Union County. We install vinyl, aluminum, WPC composite, wood, post-and-rail and chain link fencing, and we sell fence materials for pickup at our Fairfield location.
Union Township Fence Rules: No Front-Yard Fences
Union's fence rules sit in the township's Land Development code, Chapter 170, Article 12 (Supplemental Regulations). The provisions that shape most home projects are:
- Zoning permit required: The Township of Union Building Department requires a zoning permit for a fence, and the application asks for a copy of your property survey.
- Front yards: no fences. Fences are prohibited in front yard areas in all zones — there is no four-foot front-yard option like many nearby towns allow.
- Side and rear yards: six feet maximum. No wall or fence may exceed six feet in height in side or rear yard areas.
- Two inches from the property line: In residential zones, a side- or rear-yard fence may be built no closer than two inches to a property line.
- Finished side out: The finished side of the fence must face the adjacent property.
- Corner lots: A twelve-foot side yard setback must be maintained within 15 feet of the rear property line where it abuts a front yard or where sight distance requires it (the Construction Code Official may waive or modify this if no sight-distance concern exists). Separately, on a corner lot, a fence over 30 inches tall may not be placed closer than 25 feet to the intersecting street right-of-way lines.
- Dog runs and privacy areas: Fencing for a dog run or privacy area may be up to six feet, but only in the rear yard and set back at least 15 feet from any lot line.
- No dangerous materials: Barbed wire and metal spikes are prohibited on residential fences.
- Pools: Pool barriers must meet the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. Height alone does not make an enclosure compliant — gates, latching hardware and spacing all count.
Because front-yard fencing is off the table, the layout work in Union is about making the side and rear runs work: where the fence leaves the house, how gates land, and how the two-inch property-line rule plays out along your survey lines. We recommend confirming the proposed fence line with the township's Zoning Office before installation.

A Recent Union Estimate: 198 Feet of White Vinyl Privacy
We recently prepared an estimate for a Union homeowner for about 198 feet of six-foot white vinyl privacy fencing with two gates — a typical full backyard enclosure for the township's residential lots. A run that size usually wraps both side yards and the rear line, so the plan has to account for the two-inch property-line rule on every run, gate placement for yard access, and the corner-lot setbacks if the property sits at an intersection.
If you are planning something similar, we can measure your yard, talk through gate locations and give you an exact price — estimates are free.
Fence Styles for Union Homes
White Vinyl Privacy Fencing — Our Most-Quoted Style in Union
White vinyl privacy fencing is the go-to choice for Union backyards: a full six-foot enclosure that fits the township's side- and rear-yard height limit exactly. Our standard panels are six feet high by eight feet wide with 2-inch by 7-inch rails, and vinyl never needs painting or staining. A Victorian picket-top style is also available where you want a more decorative finish — the total height, decorative top included, still has to stay within the six-foot limit.
WPC Composite and Wood Fencing
WPC composite fencing gives a modern, solid look with the privacy of vinyl and a wood-like finish. Traditional wood fencing and post-and-rail suit Union's older residential streets and larger rear lots; post-and-rail defines a boundary without closing it in, while solid wood gives full privacy. We quote these styles per project after reviewing footage, gates and terrain.
Black Aluminum Pool Fencing
For pool enclosures, Solanos Fence installs 54-inch black aluminum pool-barrier fencing. Open-style aluminum keeps sight lines clear around the pool while meeting barrier requirements when the complete enclosure — gates, self-latching hardware and spacing — is built to the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code. Remember that in Union this fencing belongs in the side and rear yards; front-yard fences are prohibited.
Chain Link Fencing
We also install chain link for side and rear yards, dog runs and commercial properties in Union. Township code prohibits barbed wire and metal spikes on fences (outside permitted industrial applications), so residential chain link is installed without them.
Fence Installation Prices in Union
Current installation specials start at $23 per linear foot for six-foot white vinyl privacy fencing and $28 per linear foot for 54-inch black aluminum pool-barrier fencing. Both offers require a 150-linear-foot minimum project and are subject to service-area restrictions. Gates and removal of existing fencing cost extra. Other styles and layouts are priced by individual estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fences in Union
Can I put a short decorative fence in my front yard?
No. Union Township prohibits fences in front yard areas in all zones — even a low decorative fence is not permitted there. Fencing belongs in the side and rear yards, up to six feet high.
How close to my property line can the fence be?
In residential zones, a side- or rear-yard fence may be built no closer than two inches to a property line. A current survey is the reliable way to place the fence line, and the township asks for a copy of the survey with the zoning permit application.
My home is on a corner lot. What extra rules apply?
Two of them: within 15 feet of your rear property line, a twelve-foot side yard setback applies where that side yard abuts a front yard or where sight distance requires it — and any fence over 30 inches tall must stay at least 25 feet back from the intersecting street right-of-way lines. We flag both when we lay out a corner-lot project.
